Study: HIEs Help Reduce Unnecessary Medical Imaging Up to 25%

The use of health information exchanges can reduce the odds that a patient will undergo unnecessary repeat imaging by up to 25%, according to a recent study published in the American Journal of Managed Care, Clinical Innovation & Technology. Researchers focused on a cohort of 196,314 patients in 11 New York counties, using claims data from two major insurance plans as well as information drawn from the Rochester Regional Health Information Organization (Rochester RHIO) to discover how HIE-connected providers ordered imaging compared to non-connected peers.
