Got disruptive innovation in healthcare? You bet! On June 14-15th, 2013, the New York eHealth Collaborative, in partnership with NorthSide Media, hosted the Northside Festival’s 1st Annual Hackathon. A highlight of the Hackathon was the use of the SHIN-NY API, which enables users to leverage the power of electronic medical data.
Healthcare Panel
The festivities started at the Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg, with a panel of healthcare experts speaking on the subject of driving innovation in healthcare delivery. The panelists were David Whitlinger, Executive Director at NYeC; Cheryl Swirnow, COO/Co-Founder at Sherpaa; Steve Krein, Co-founder and Managing Partner at StartUp Health; and Katie McCurdy, UX Designer & Researcher at Experience Design LLC. The moderator was Akshay Kapur, who is Senior Partner at Human Condition. A key take away from the panel: Healthcare transformation is happening now and a golden opportunity is available for entrepreneurs to create innovative solutions that increase health and wealth for everyone.
Hackathon
Saturday June 15 was Hackathon day at 3rd Ward, in Brooklyn, and featured over 40 participants who spent the day thinking, designing, and coding (aka “Hacking”). The moment of truth came at judging time. The judges were: Anuj Desai, Vice President, Market Development at New York eHealth Collaborative; Matt Wallaert, Behavioral Scientist at Microsoft; Michelle Zimmerman, Strategy & Incubation at Healthagen, a Division of Aetna; and David Haddad, Director at Open mHealth. The winning ideas were presented by:
1st Place – Pocket Health: The dynamic trio of Tendi Muchenje, Gary-Yau Chan, and Avi Das designed a mobile app which provides a patient’s medical history displayed in a graphical timeline format. The Pocket Health team received $2,000 in cash, VIP tickets to Solange, Nike Fuelbands, and will be featured in an article in L magazine.
2nd Place – AlertCloud: The three hack-a-teers Collette Ellis, J.P. McGarrity, and Tobias Wright, demonstrated a mobile app which sends text and voice messages to designated recipients in the event of a medical emergency. The AlertCloud team received $1,500 in cash and VIP tickets to Solange.
3rd Place – Crumby: The amazing techno-mites Ted and Sara showcased their social networking app which enables users to contribute and find tips (i.e., “crumbs”) regarding local restaurants. The Crumby team received $750 in case and VIP tickets to Solange.
